Amazing Makeup Range! Glossybox Advent Calendar 2020

£80 for subscribers / non-subscribers £99 (worth £390)

The Glossybox Beauty Advent Calendar 2020 is a very loved and long awaited one. Read why I think it has one of the best offers in makeup. But is this enough to make it a strong choice?

Makeup: 10 items

We got to the point where ten makeup items in one calendar seems like a miracle! The combination of makeup items is well thought and the category offers a variety of products, from eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara to lipsticks and highlighters.

For the eyes we have the Iconic Eyeshadow Day To Slay Palette (worth £45!) in full size, which has shimmer, glitter and matte shades in warm, earthy colours of browns, goldens and pinks. It has 20 shades and is a fantastic makeup item for an advent calendar!

There is also a loose pigment from Sleek, which looks very promising. The shade is not specified.

For lining the eyes, we have the Illamasqua Liquid Eyeliner in full size, which is another high-end makeup product. There is also a mascara, the KVD Vegan Beauty Mascara ‘Go Big or Go Home’ in black, in a mini size. As I previously mentioned in my other reviews of Beauty Advent Calendars, mascaras in mini sizes are no drawback as they are enough to be used for the three months recommended.

For eyebrows there is the MUA Brow Define Pencil in full size, which has a very thin pencil and a brush to comb the eyebrows. The product looks great, but I have to admit I was surprised to see MUA which is such an extremely affordable brand (£2) in a £99 calendar. Also, as I have previously mentioned about eyebrow products in advent calendars, depending on the shade of the pencil, it will not suit everyone, being a matter of luck.

For the lips we have two items. The Lime Crime Matte Velvetines Liquid Lipstick (deluxe size) which does not have the shade specified. I think smaller sizes for liquid lipsticks are enough, again, as personally I almost never empty liquid lip products before they expire. This is a vegan and cruelty free product which has a gorgeous floral packaging. The Huda Beauty Power Bullet Matte Lipstick in Wedding Day (full size) is a soft caramelised cool toned pink. Both lip products are a fantastic addition to the calendar.

The Glossybox calendar has two highlighting products. The first one is the Fenty Beauty Match Stix Shimmer Stick (full size). This was an extremely hyped product when it was released and I am sure that any beauty lover would like to try it. The product comes in many shades, so it remains to be seen in what shade the one in the calendar will be.

The second highlighter is the Zoeva Screen Queen Highlighting Palette, which has three highlighter shades in a light champagne shade, a pink one and a deep golden brown one, which will suit darker skin tones.

Finally, the Brushworks HD Complexion & Contouring Sponge Set is a great addition, by giving you three sponges to apply your makeup with. They have different sizes and can be used for multiple purposes. It is also a great way to experiment with different makeup application tools.

Overall the makeup section looks good, with various products to use and play with, some of them being really impressive from well-known brands.

Skincare items in the Glossybox advent calendar 2020
Sizes, colours and presentation may vary

Skincare: 9 items

The skincare section in the Glossybox calendar is slightly smaller than other calendars, but not by much. As usual, I divided the products into categories so it is easier to follow but please be aware that some of them suit multiple purposes.

Moisturisers and Primers

As moisturisers and primers there are three products. The first one is Glossybox’s own 3 in 1 Moisturiser in full size (50ml). Glossybox released their own skincare range and it has quite a few products. I think this is a fantastic way of introducing even more people to their skincare range.  In terms of the 3 in 1 moisturiser, there are two versions, the one in the calendar appearing to be the light version, suitable for combination or oily skin. According to the Glossybox official website, this product plumps, moisturises and primes.

Then there is the Bare Minerals Prime Time Foundation Primer, in a deluxe size, which is vegan and cruelty free. The last product in this category is the Pixi Glow Mist in full size (80ml), which is a hydrating spray that can be used both to moisturise skin before makeup and to set the makeup in place for a dewy finish.

So far, the moisturising section looks good and I am glad to see this type of products included.

Eye care

In terms of eyecare they included a full size Avant Skincare product, the 3-1 Hyaluron Filler Collagen Eye Formula. This is an anti-ageing eye cream and the full size in this calendar is worth £99.99 which is amusing, because it only has 10ml.

Anti-ageing

Another anti-aging cream in this calendar is the Filorga Paris NCEF Supreme Multi- Correction Cream which comes in a deluxe size which I have previously seen in the M&S Calendar, and it is tiny. However, Filorga is a high-end brand so it would be nice to be able to try some of their products.

Masks

In terms of masks, we have two options – an oil absorbing, clarifying one, and a hydrating one that also has AHA which will exfoliate your skin. The first one is from The Body Shop, and it is a mini version of their Himalayan Purifying Charcoal Mask. On their website the mini version is 5ml, so it remains to be seen if only that little will be included in the calendar or if it will be a bigger size. It is heavily fragranced and contains menthol as well.

The mask for glowing skin is from Glow Recipe, Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask (deluxe size). This one contains fragrance again, but I am intrigued by its ingredients list and I think this sounds like a potentially fantastic product. This mask is vegan and cruelty free. Their mini version comes in 30ml which would be a generous size nevertheless if this is the size the calendar provides.

Exfoliators

There are other products in this calendar with exfoliating properties, but there are two that are mainly advertised as such. The Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant is an interesting one, as it comes in the form of a powder which you have to mix with water and create a paste. Funnily enough, we are not getting rid of fragrance even in this powder. Other than this, the ingredients look fantastic and I would be intrigued to try a product like this. In the calendar it comes in a mini version of 13g.

The second one is the Sunday Riley Good Genes Glycolic Acid Treatment which comes in a deluxe size and is advertised as both a moisturiser and as an exfoliator.

The skincare section is well diversified, containing moisturisers, primers, exfoliators, anti-ageing products, eye care and masks. My only complaint is that only three products out of nine come in full size, the rest probably coming in tiny amounts. Even the eye cream which is one of the full sizes, only has 10ml.

As usual, most products contain perfume, but as I mentioned in the other calendar reviews, unfortunately this is a trend that is on full speed in all calendars and in most skincare on the market, so it is not a flaw only for this calendar.

Body, hair and bath products in the Glossybox Advent Calendar 2020
Sizes, colours and presentation may vary

Body, Bath & Other: 5 items
Hair: 1 item

The only product intended for the hair in this calendar is the Lee Stafford 10 in 1 Leave In Treatment Spray in full size (100ml).  This product hydrates and smooths out the hair. I usually love this type of sprays for my hair, as it keeps it hydrated and helps detangling it. This is a fantastic addition to the calendar, and the size is generous as well. I do wish, however, they added more items for the hair in this calendar.

Body Care: 1 item

There is a full size Ecooking Hand Cream (30ml), filled with hydrating ingredients, which is a lovely addition. This is another vegan and cruelty free product.

In terms of scrubs and masks, there is the Frank Body Coffee Scrub which is a mechanical exfoliator. This is another vegan and cruelty free product.

Bath: 1 item

Unfortunately in the bath section there is only one product, which is the Bubble T Bath Bomb Fizzers, so let’s hope you do have a bath to use them. They are vegan and seem to come in a multitude of fragrances!

Nails: 1 item

We finally have a product intended for the nails, the Nails Inc Polish in Victoria (full size). This is a pricey nailpolish that has a beautiful bottle, is vegan and cruelty free, and comes in a sophisticated deep cherry red. It is also infused with keratin and vitamins for stronger nails!

Miscellaneous: 1 item

In the miscellaneous section there is the Vintage Cosmetics Company Polly Bow Make-Up Headband which is an adorable headband with a big bow, perfect to be used when you wash your face or when you are applying face masks.

EXPERIENCE

This calendar looks different from others, in terms that it does not have 25 individual boxes for the products. It has four drawers instead. The pastel pink does not necessarily remind of Christmas but the box does look beautiful and sturdy.

This calendar contains 25 items so it will give you something on Christmas Day as well.

IS IT WORTH IT?

The Glossybox Calendar comes in strong in the race of the best 2020 calendars by having a fantastic makeup section. With many full size products and with hyped brands, the makeup section offers brilliant options.

The price is also not very expensive, with many other calendars double the price on the market, so for the range of products included I think it is a strong choice.

The makeup section alone is worth £165 (out of the total of £390). If you are highly interested in the makeup items and are very keen to try them, then this could be worth it. However, this is only if all the colours match you, which for some of the products is impossible to tell, since some are not specified. I also noticed some items are on sale now, so there is a chance you could get away with paying around £99 anyway.

You also get a beautiful nail polish, a hand cream, which will always come in handy (yes, pun intended!) and a few other mix and match products.

My favourite thing about this calendar is the fact that the makeup section overtakes the skincare one, so that if the buyer is sensitive to certain ingredients and will end up not using some skincare, the calendar is still strong enough with the makeup section so that it does not end up being a disappointment. However, do keep in mind that an astronomical £100 of this calendar is just the 10 ml eye cream. I also noticed that mini sizes are trending in this calendar in terms of skincare.

I do wonder though why they did not include more Glossybox skincare products in the calendar.

Another thing that I noticed about this calendar is the fact that many of the products it contains are vegan and cruelty free. While I did not individually check every single item in every 2020 beauty advent calendar, the Glossybox one did give me the impression that it contains more vegan friendly items.

Another thing to note is that the discount for subscribers is £19. Like for the Look Fantastic calendar, I would suggest you subscribe for the beauty box when you purchase this calendar, so that you can receive even more products for the same price. However, unlike the Look Fantastic one, with the Glossybox offer the prices for the boxes do not perfectly fit within the £19 mark. If you purchase one beauty box, this is only £13.25. This means that you would pay £80 for the calendar, £13.25 for one beauty box, with a total of £93.25 in price and 30 products.
